Benzema Embraces Al Hilal: “The Madrid of Asia”

Karim Benzema has expressed his desire to secure trophies for his new team, Al Hilal, in the Saudi Professional League, which he regards as the “Real Madrid of Asia.” The French striker decided against extending his contract with Al Ittihad, opting instead to join Al Hilal, the league leaders.

Speaking to the club’s website for the first time since his transfer, Benzema said, “It’s fantastic. I’m thrilled to be here and feel great after my initial training session with the team and the coach. Al Hilal is a strong team with a rich history and a significant trophy haul.” He went on to compare the club’s environment and mentality to that of Real Madrid—praising its passionate fans and high-quality play. Benzema recalled playing against Al Hilal during his time at Madrid, emphasizing that it was a memorable and challenging match. He added, “I’ve always admired this team, and today I’m delighted to be one of its players.”

Reports indicate that the 38-year-old felt underappreciated by Al Ittihad’s offer for a contract extension. In his new role with Al Hilal, he is expected to play without financial concerns due to a special arrangement involving contracts for key players at clubs owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF). Even after receiving offers from European clubs, Benzema chose to continue in Saudi Arabia, as his image rights deal there extends until 2030. This transition, facilitated by PIF, reportedly angered former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently leads rival team Al Nasr.

Ronaldo has reportedly expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of investment in Al Nasr by PIF, which he believes has given Al Hilal an upper hand. He aims to win his first major trophy with Al Nasr, who trail Al Hilal by one point in the league standings. Meanwhile, Benzema, who previously helped Al Ittihad clinch the league title and the Copa del Rey, is eager for more success. “I have big ambitions,” he stated. “It’s crucial for me to bring home trophies. Together, with our excellent team and dedicated fans, we can achieve this.”

Since arriving in Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2023, Benzema has already won 25 trophies with Real Madrid, including four La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey titles, and five Champions League titles. He has made a notable impact in the league, scoring 8 goals in 14 matches this season. His debut with Al Hilal will take place in Thursday’s match against Al Okdood.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it demonstrates the growing competitiveness and allure of the Saudi Professional League, drawing top-tier talent like Benzema. His presence could not only elevate Al Hilal’s performance but also inspire a new wave of interest in soccer across the region.
