Chris Waddle has given his thoughts on the ongoing takeover drama at Sheffield Wednesday.

Wigfield provides ‘clear and honest’ update on acquisition

It’s been a tough time for Sheffield Wednesday, who have yet to find new ownership since taking over in October. The Owls are in desperate need of some positive news after losing Barry Bannan to Millwall in the January transfer window and going nine games without scoring.

However, co-administrator Chris Wigfield failed to provide the update Wednesday fans had asked for earlier this week, issuing a “clear and honest” statement.

Good news for owls…

he said: “Now that the January transfer window has closed, we wanted to give our supporters a clear and honest update on the current situation and our focus in the coming weeks.

“There is no getting away from the fact that these are difficult times. It hurts to lose important players, especially when the club has already been through so much. But it is also important to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, what the club has achieved since going into administration and what we are working towards.”

“Since our appointment, the club has transitioned from administration to the appointment of a preferred bidder in just over two months, a period that compares very favorably with other football administrations.”

Wednesday has yet to formally announce its preferred bidder, but reports suggest a consortium led by James Board has emerged in pole position.

The big question now is when that consortium will take the important next step and complete the takeover of the club, but former Sheffield Wednesday star Waddle has revealed what he has heard.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Waddle said he had heard about the Owls’ acquisition.

“I’m not listening very well. It’s the same thing. There are three or four parties fighting. Nothing concrete. This is the annoying part for everyone. Nobody seems to be near the finish line.”

“The season is going to be long, they are relegated and there is no way out of it. The important thing is to build the game at the moment and achieve.”

“A lot of players left the team and they had to bring in players on loan. And these are young players who haven’t really played at that level, to be honest. It’s all about experience for them and it’s good for the feeder clubs that got them to Wednesday.”

Young players Waddle mentioned include Joel Ndala and Tayo Adalamola, who were added on deadline day from Manchester City and Crystal Palace respectively.

Both players are still young but will give Hillsborough a chance to invigorate, at least for the remainder of the season. Relegation from the Championship is almost certain at this stage, but that doesn’t mean the Owls can’t do it without pride before new owners potentially arrive.
