Justin Gaethje Opens Up on Finding Joy in Defeat After Max Holloway KO: “I’d Go Through It 100 Times”

Justin Gaethje Reflects on His Most Crushing Defeat in the Octagon

Justin Gaethje recently shared his unique take on what he calls the most devastating loss of his career inside the UFC Octagon. Last month, Gaethje was thrilled to disprove expectations when Paddy Pimblett ended the Briton’s victorious stretch, claiming the interim lightweight title for a second time.

Despite his extensive experience against elite contenders, Gaethje entered UFC 324 as an underdog. He openly admitted surprise at his recent success and candidly discussed the loss that once threatened to derail his career. Gaethje highlighted that overcoming such adversity made his last two victories all the more remarkable.

Justin Gaethje Embraces His Knockout Loss to Max Holloway, Who Risked Everything to Secure Victory

Gaethje believes he has only had two fights where he wasn’t performing at his best, one being a match that ended with one of the most unforgettable knockouts in UFC history. In a past interview with ESPN MMA, he reflected on his UFC 300 BMF title fight against Max Holloway, admitting it was a mistake to treat it as anything less than a serious, high-stakes battle.

He acknowledged failing to “recognize the danger” he was in during the fight but expressed no regrets over how the match concluded. Fans watched anxiously as Charles Oliveira appeared to mimic Holloway’s signature point-down celebration right before Holloway knocked Gaethje out cold near the end of the fight.

On The Pat McAfee Show, Gaethje shared that entering the fight knowing he was behind, the all-or-nothing brawl was his sole chance to win. “I was in a bad position, I put myself out there knowing I was losing, and I had that chance. I’d do it all over again 100 times and I’m glad I lost like that,” he stated.

Gaethje further explained that losing in such a dramatic fashion actually enhanced his legacy since he bounced back with two consecutive wins. He said, “It’s better for my legacy to lose like that than by a split second decision. Coming back after a knockout and winning twice is really exciting, and what I’m aiming to do at the end of my career is even more thrilling—which ultimately is why I’m here.”

Another UFC Legend Nearly Faced a Similar Fate Against Max Holloway

Gaethje isn’t the only fighter who took up Holloway’s challenge to finish fights with intense, risky exchanges. Dustin Poirier was poised for a last-ditch moment in the final 10 seconds of his retirement bout last July. Yet, Poirier pulled back after an explosive exchange, unwilling to end his final fight on a knockout loss.

“The Diamond” took a calculated risk but chose not to roll the dice on a knockout finish. Still, Gaethje has shown openness to a potential third bout against Poirier, especially after the former announced plans to come out of retirement for the matchup.

Fan Take:
This insight into Gaethje’s mindset reveals the warrior spirit that defines the sport—embracing risk and even defeat to chase greatness. Fans should be excited as these fighters’ willingness to engage in high-stakes battles pushes MMA to new heights, ensuring every fight is filled with dramatic, legacy-defining moments.
