Jim Schwartz Steps Down as Browns Defensive Coordinator Following Promotion to Head Coach

CLEVELAND (AP) — After three seasons, Jim Schwartz has stepped down as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. The team revealed on Friday that Schwartz handed in his resignation the previous day. During his tenure, Schwartz managed one of the NFL’s leading defenses and was reportedly disappointed after being passed over for the head coaching position, a role many believed he was the top candidate to inherit following Kevin Stefanski’s departure.

The Browns appointed Todd Monken as their new head coach on January 29. At his first press conference on Tuesday, Monken confirmed he had talked to Schwartz but had no definite information regarding his return, even though Schwartz still had one year left on his contract. Monken also clarified that the team does not plan to alter their defensive scheme regardless of Schwartz’s decision to stay or leave.

“We’re going to keep the defense aggressive and free-flowing because that’s the style that attracted me to the team,” Monken said. “When prepping for Cleveland, my focus wasn’t on Jim Schwartz, it was on players like Myles Garrett, Grant Delpit, Denzel Ward, and Tyson Campbell — those are the matchups that matter.”

In 2023, Cleveland topped the league in total defense and secured a fourth-place ranking this season. Garrett made history by recording 23 sacks, setting a new NFL single-season record. He was also honored as the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in three years.

“We’re fortunate to have outstanding players and a strong coaching staff,” Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said Tuesday. “Jim would acknowledge the great leadership across the defensive line, linebackers, cornerbacks, and safeties. We’re eager to keep moving forward.”
