Stuani Steps Up for Second-Half Penalty but Misses as Girona and Sevilla Share the Spoils

Sevilla and Girona played to a 1-1 draw in their rescheduled Spanish league match on Sunday, which had been postponed from Saturday due to severe weather warnings in Seville. Girona’s striker Cristian Stuani only entered the game in the final minute to take a penalty but missed the chance to secure a win after his shot was saved by Sevilla goalkeeper Odyseas Blahodimos.

Girona opened the scoring early with a goal from Thomas Lemar in the second minute, but Sevilla equalized late in stoppage time thanks to a powerful long-range strike from Quique Salas. Shortly after, Girona was awarded a penalty, prompting coach Michel to bring Stuani on specifically for the kick, although the seasoned Uruguayan’s attempt was unsuccessful. According to Spanish media, this was Stuani’s first missed penalty in a league match in three years.

This draw leaves Girona in 12th place, one point above Sevilla in 13th, and Girona remains winless in their last three league fixtures. Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano’s home game against Oviedo was postponed last minute due to safety issues at Vallecas Stadium.

Elsewhere in the league, Athletic Bilbao came from behind to beat Levante 4-2 after scoring four goals in the final 10 minutes. Despite Levante playing with ten men from the 17th minute due to a red card, they managed to pull level before Athletic sealed the victory with late goals. Athletic, sitting 10th, have now gone six league games without a win since December.

Getafe snapped a nine-match winless streak by defeating Alaves 2-0, while Atletico Madrid will face Real Betis later on Sunday. Real Madrid also looks to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona when they visit Valencia.
