Can the D-backs Seriously Compete for the Title This Season?

Week two of these daily questions has started, focusing this time on the themes of Roster, Expectations, and Reality Checks. Arizona enters the 2026 season coming off a losing record but only signed one of MLB Trade Rumors’ Top 50 free agents—Meryl Kelly, who was already part of the team for most of last year. They bolstered their lineup with seasoned veterans Nolan Arenado and Carlos Santana, and made a few small moves to improve their bullpen, which struggled significantly last season. But is this enough to make a real impact, or is it just cosmetic, simply rearranging the players on a middling squad?

Is Arizona genuinely committed to competing, or just going through the motions?

Rarely does any team openly admit they don’t stand much of a chance. While the Rockies’ front office might understandably throw in the towel and raise doubts, the Diamondbacks are in a different position. They missed the playoffs by just three games last year despite enduring major injuries, so a full rebuild doesn’t seem necessary. With so much uncertainty looming around the 2027 season, it may be wise to hold off on any bold moves until the new collective bargaining agreement is finalized. As spring training approaches, we want to hear what you think about the team’s strategy and mindset heading into the new season.

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m heading to RenFair where there’s no Wi-Fi, so I won’t be able to respond immediately. 🙂 I’ll catch up on your thoughts once I return from the Middle Ages!

Fan Take: This offseason’s modest moves highlight the precarious balance many teams face between rebuilding and competing, especially amid looming CBA negotiations. For baseball fans, Arizona’s approach is a reminder that patience and strategy often matter as much as marquee signings in shaping a team’s future and the sport’s competitive landscape.
