Stephen Curry was selected by fans as an All-Star starter, but Warriors head coach Steve Kerr announced Monday that Curry will sit out the game due to symptoms of “runner’s knee,” formally known as right patellofemoral pain syndrome. This marks Curry’s fourth consecutive missed game, and Kerr indicated that the recovery period may extend beyond that. Along with missing the All-Star Game, Curry won’t play in Wednesday’s matchup against the Spurs. Taking into account the games he has already missed plus the All-Star break, Curry is expected to have close to three weeks to rest and heal his knee.

“He’s doing well,” Kerr shared. “That’s encouraging. It’s day-to-day, so predicting exactly when he’ll return is tough, but we’re hopeful. The goal is to get him through this week so he can be ready to suit up after the break.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will appoint a replacement for Curry on the USA Stripes team in this year’s All-Star Game, which features a unique USA versus World format. This year marks Curry’s 12th All-Star selection. At 37 years old, Curry is averaging 27.2 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 39.1% from beyond the arc. The Warriors will need to continue finding ways to generate offense without both Curry and Jimmy Butler, the latter sidelined for the season due to an ACL tear.

All-Star Game Format

The NBA All-Star Game returns to NBC and Peacock this year, coinciding with the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, creating an ideal atmosphere for a new All-Star experience: the USA versus World showdown fans have eagerly anticipated. The 24 All-Star players are split into three teams—two American squads (USA Stripes and USA Stars) and one international team—competing in a round-robin tournament. There are four games of 12 minutes each, and every team plays at least two games. The top two teams after this round face off in the championship game, the fourth 12-minute match, with a tiebreaker based on point differential if necessary.

Fan Take: Stephen Curry’s absence is significant for basketball enthusiasts since he remains one of the league’s most electrifying and influential players. How the Warriors adapt in his absence will be critical, and this development highlights the ever-present challenge of managing star players’ health in today’s demanding NBA schedule.
