  • Chelsea need a new striker to lead the attack
  • Blues face stiff competition for Alvarez

Chelsea are stepping up efforts to sign Julián Alvarez, with new reports claiming the Blues are ramping up negotiations with Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to ESPN Argentina, Chelsea are currently ‘advanced’ in negotiations and are closing in on Arsenal in the race for the Argentine striker.

Atletico have just signed Alvarez for 2024, having reportedly invested £82m to sign him from Manchester City.

At the time, manager Diego Simeone was keen to build an attack around him and the move was seen as a significant statement.

But the past few months have been difficult for the 26-year-old, who has suffered a decline in form amid tactical adjustments and fierce competition for positions.

Chelsea need a new striker to lead the attack

Chelsea’s interest is rooted in long-term plans. The club is actively restructuring its attacking department and sees Alvarez as a forward who can lead the line while fitting into a fluid, high-intensity system.

His versatility, being able to play as a central striker or as a slightly deeper striker, is seen as a major asset, especially for a team looking for greater cohesion and reliability in front of goal.

Sources say Chelsea are aware that Arsenal remain keen and could decisively re-enter negotiations if given the opportunity, and appear to be positioning themselves early to avoid a late bidding war.

Beyond the Premier League, Barcelona have long admired Alvarez.

However, continued financial constraints at the Camp Nou have made a move difficult, and the player’s destination has fallen back to England.

This reality strengthens Chelsea’s belief that a return to the Premier League is the most realistic outcome should Atletico decide to listen to offers.

Importantly, Atlético are under no pressure to sell. Recent investments have alleviated previous financial concerns, leaving clubs free to demand a premium if they open the door to negotiations.

Any deal would therefore require significant outlays, potentially exceeding what Atlético paid.
