The Detroit Tigers have signed their legendary pitcher Justin Verlander to a one-year free agent contract for the 2026 season, a move the team confirmed on Tuesday. According to FanSided, the agreement is valued at $13 million, with $11 million of that amount deferred.

Verlander, who will turn 43 on February 20, is concluding the 2025 season with the San Francisco Giants, where he has started 29 games, pitched 152 innings, and recorded a 3.85 ERA and FIP. This new deal marks a reunion with the team that initially drafted him second overall in 2004 out of Old Dominion University. Verlander spent the first 12-plus years of his major league career wearing a Tigers uniform, during which he achieved 183 wins and accumulated a WAR (Wins Above Replacement) of 56.6. Notably, in 2011, Verlander earned both the American League Cy Young Award and MVP recognition. His tenure helped lead the Tigers to five postseason appearances and a pennant in 2006, his rookie year.

Verlander’s time in Detroit ended mid-2017 when he was traded to the Houston Astros. With Houston, he won two additional Cy Young Awards. As a future Hall of Famer, his career stats entering next season include a WAR of 82.2, 266 wins, and 3,553 strikeouts.

Returning to Detroit, Verlander will join a rotation potentially spearheaded by back-to-back AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, along with free agent signing Framber Valdez. The 2026 Tigers are aiming for their third consecutive postseason, with Verlander expected to bring stability alongside pitchers Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize.

Upon his return, Verlander ties the franchise record for most strikeouts as a Tiger with 2,373, matching Mickey Lolich’s 307 strikeouts.

Fan Take: Justin Verlander’s homecoming symbolizes more than just nostalgia—it revitalizes one of baseball’s most respected pitching rotations and injects veteran leadership into a young, promising Tigers roster. For fans and the sport alike, Verlander’s return adds an exciting chapter to his storied career and could inspire a deep playoff run in Detroit.
