Canelo Alvarez Demands Rematch with Terrence Crawford, Citing Cramps in Their First Encounter

Despite Terrence Crawford’s retirement, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is interested in a rematch of their September fight, which Crawford won decisively by unanimous decision. Crawford, who spent most of his career competing at welterweight and lightweight before a brief stint at junior middleweight, moved up to super middleweight specifically to face Alvarez. Many doubted whether this jump was suitable for Crawford, but he controlled much of the fight and outboxed Alvarez, ultimately becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion. Throughout his career, Crawford also held undisputed titles at welterweight and junior welterweight, as well as the WBO lightweight belt.

Alvarez mentioned during the fight that the outcome might have changed if he had followed his corner’s guidance, adding that leg cramps were a major factor affecting his performance. “I tried, but my body didn’t cooperate,” Alvarez told Rick Reno on the Mr. Verzas Podcast. “I had leg cramps, so I couldn’t react like I wanted to. You learn from these things and keep moving forward. Winning doesn’t mean you win every fight—you have to learn from losses, accept them, and continue doing what you love.”

Following his win over Alvarez, Crawford announced his retirement, stating he feels he has nothing left to prove and mentioned that 38 is considered old in the boxing world. However, Alvarez, during a guest spot on his own podcast, insisted that Crawford owes him a rematch to truly validate his victory. “I give him full credit, but I want to get my chance back. I said after the fight that we need to make this rematch happen because I wasn’t satisfied,” Alvarez said. “If he wants to deserve all the praise, he needs to give me a rematch.”

Fan Take: This potential rematch keeps the excitement alive for fight fans who witnessed a high-level showdown between two of boxing’s best. A second clash could redefine legacies and inject new energy into the super middleweight division, making it a must-watch event for the sport.
