The Detroit Red Wings haven’t had a defenseman win the Norris Trophy since the legendary Nicklas Lidstrom, who secured the award seven times, most recently in 2011. However, it looks like that drought might come to an end this season.

Defenseman Moritz Seider possesses the necessary skills to become one of the NHL’s elite at his position. Currently, he leads all Red Wings defensemen in ice time and points, contributing across all game situations and maintaining a team-best plus-13 rating. While Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche is considered the frontrunner for the Norris Trophy, Seider is giving him strong competition.

On a recent episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, hosts Ryan Whitney and Paul Bissonnette, along with Hall of Famer Chris Pronger, discussed Seider’s potential. Whitney mentioned that Seider’s style is reminiscent of a player like Pronger—tough, physical, and imposing. Whitney asked if Seider exhibits traits similar to those of Pronger, and Bissonnette inquired if he’s currently the top defenseman in the league. Pronger responded confidently, affirming that Seider is indeed the No. 1 at his position right now, highlighting the qualities that define a top NHL defenseman.

Seider, along with his partner Edvinsson, has formed one of the top defensive duos in the league this season—key contributors to Detroit’s strong standing during the Olympic break.

Fan Take: This development is exciting for hockey fans because it signals the potential rebirth of Detroit’s defense corps and could lead to a new Norris Trophy contender emerging from the Red Wings. Recognizing Seider’s rise also underscores the league’s ongoing evolution, showcasing young talent that could shape the future of hockey.
