After Months of Talks, Alex Pereira Teases Move to UFC Heavyweight Division

UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira has expressed interest in moving up to the heavyweight division for several months.

In October, “Poitan” defeated Magomed Ankalaev in a swift rematch headlining UFC 313, showcasing his superior striking skills to reclaim the light heavyweight belt. Following this victory, the 38-year-old politely requested a heavyweight bout against the legendary Jon Jones. Although Jones has since retired and reaffirmed that decision, the possibility of Pereira stepping into the heavyweight division is becoming more tangible.

Despite only competing at 205 pounds since 2023, the Brazilian has faced numerous top light heavyweight contenders, leaving him with very few fresh high-profile matchups. One notable contender is Carlos Ulberg, third-ranked and riding an impressive nine-fight winning streak, but this matchup might not fully excite Pereira as Ulberg isn’t widely considered a major star. Being one of the biggest names in MMA, ‘Poitan’ is eager to move to heavyweight in pursuit of making history by becoming a three-division champion.

Initially, UFC president Dana White was hesitant about Pereira’s move to heavyweight. Nonetheless, the Brazilian recently teased the possibility on social media, captioning an Instagram post with, “1-2-3 and go.” If he moves up, Pereira is expected to challenge for the heavyweight title, although current champion Tom Aspinall is sidelined due to a serious eye injury. There are also rumors of an interim heavyweight title being introduced, sparking speculation about a potential clash between Pereira and Cyril Gane.

Already a significant figure in UFC history and considered one of the sport’s most thrilling athletes, Pereira’s success at heavyweight would solidify his legacy. Achieving titles in three weight classes would uniquely position him in future GOAT conversations, as no other fighter has accomplished this rare feat.

Fan Take: For fight fans, Pereira’s potential move to heavyweight injects fresh excitement into a division that lacks clear dominant figures due to injuries and retirements. If he succeeds, it could reshape the sport’s history and inspire unprecedented cross-division challenges, elevating MMA’s competitive landscape.
