How Cobra OPTM fitters put this genius gadget to work for them (and you!)

The club market in 2026 is flooded with so much technology that it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. Even on the PGA Tour, it takes players as well as equipment personnel several months to truly understand what the latest clubs are capable of. Everyone is tech-savvy, but hitting the club is a human, and just like any other industry, it needs hands-on testing.

One of the challenges fitters face is playing in a new sandbox every year. Center of gravity placement is changing, face technology is becoming more subtle, and shafts are becoming more advanced. The only variable and technology that actually bears significant stress is the “gear” (at least that’s what I call it). It’s the doohickey at the end of the shaft that determines loft, lie, face angle, etc.

Amateurs don’t often play around with these gadgets. (It’s like sticking your hand into a candy jar when you’re a kid. If you’re lucky, you might find a sweet treat, or in my case, your mom might put a room slipper on your forehead.) But in reality, this device isn’t something to be afraid of. Essentially, it’s a tour van in a 1-inch package.

Among the companies that have successfully used this technology is Cobra Golf with FutureFit33.

Most companies offer the ability to shift loft +/- 1 to 2 degrees, lie angle +/- 1 to 2 degrees, etc., but there are usually tradeoffs. For example, some club manufacturers allow loft down and lie movement upright, but not at the same time. Also, depending on the club manufacturer, you may only be able to move the lie upright and not flat. Cobra’s FutureFit33 allows you to adjust lie (up/down) and loft (strong/weak) with 33 options to incorporate any combo you want.

FF33 cracked the code during a fitting with Cobra’s tour operations manager, Ben Shomein. While I started putting up great numbers with the OPTM X, I had to address start line and spin issues. But all I needed was a few tweaks. So all I needed was a loft of 0.25 degrees and a lie of 0.3 degrees. On the other hand, a perfect angle will overshot the target.

Most tour trucks make these adjustments by having multiple head options or specific gears that move in stages. Cobra only needs one gear. This is a huge advantage, especially within the range of player attention. Often the fitter has to rush back to the truck and rebuild the option with another gear. or Pre-build multiple options for your players. Shomein and his crew can go out with one head, one shaft, a wrench, some weights and a boom.

The final result of my fitting was a fragment instead of a chunk. I had to reduce loft by 0.7 to spin perfection .3 flat to get the starting line perfection.

Cobra OPTM X 9 degrees @8.7, Fujikura Ventus Black Velo+ 6X (45 dog, D3, tip .5)

Swing Speed: 107-109 MPH
Ball Speed: 162 MPH
Spin: 2200RPM-2750RPM

Bottom line: OPTM changes the conversation of moments of inertia to products of inertia and connects it with the functionality you can offer to consumers. fast A head with a subtle fitting system ensures a maximally optimized driver.

Cobra has come a long way this year, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of FF33.
