Glasgow Rangers made an ambitious move in the January transfer window, signing Andreas Skov Olsen on loan from Wolfsburg in Germany.

The 26-year-old winger signed for the Bundesliga side in January 2025 for £12 million, but only scored two goals in 20 league games before moving to Ibrox.

Prior to his time in Germany, Skov Olsen made a name for himself in Europe with his time at Club Brugge in Belgium, contributing 16 or more goals in four consecutive seasons.

Since joining Danny Rolle’s side, the left-footed forward has made five appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist, including one of Youssef Cermiti’s hat-trick goals against Hearts in the Scottish Premiership last weekend.

Gers have the option to sign him permanently for £8.7m in the summer transfer window after his loan ends, but it remains to be seen whether they will take up that option.

Why the Rangers won’t sign Skov Olsen permanently

£8.7m is a significant amount for the Scottish giants, as it would be the second richest contract in the club’s history after Torre Andre Flo’s £12m in 2000.

The Gers now have a new owner in the 49ers Enterprise.

That money will also be spent on a player who turns 27 this year, which may not add much in terms of future returns. That means they need incredible confidence that he will be a consistent performer on the pitch over the next few years.

This means Skov Olsen will need to provide goals and assists regularly from now until the end of the season to prove to Gers that he is worth spending £8.7m on.

The Wolfsburg loanee has shown glimpses of his quality so far, with a goal against Kilmarnock and an assist against Hearts, but he needs to show more in the coming months to secure a permanent deal.

If Skov Olsen fails to demonstrate the exceptional quality that befits his £8.7m deal, Rangers could decide to refuse to sign him permanently and pursue other targets.

Rangers could sign Premiership star to replace Skov Olsen

Instead of paying around £9m for the Denmark international, the Light Blues could shop a little closer to home and sign a replacement from the Premiership, widening and strengthening their roll options.

Rangers are reportedly scouting Dundee forward Cameron Congreve ahead of a swoop for the winger when the summer transfer window opens.

The Wales youth international is on loan from Championship side Swansea City and it remains to be seen how much they will demand for his exploits, but Transfermarkt value him at £393,000.

Congreve, also a left-handed right winger, could be a cheaper replacement for Skov Olsen, while being four years younger and has more time to develop and improve.

The 22-year-old attacker is a proven performer in the Premiership and has shown promise with his performances on loan at Dundee so far this season, with some big wins including an assist against Celtic in October.

Congreve’s assist against the Hoops was a perfect example of his appeal. Technically gifted, the Winged Magician can move to either side with both feet and has extraordinary creative abilities.

The left-footed star has provided seven assists this season, the most in the division, and created nine ‘big chances’ for his team-mates in 23 appearances.

Congreve, described by RangersJournal’s Kai Watson as “very capable”, has provided eight assists in total, including two in two games against Celtic in all competitions.

The player, who played for Dundee on loan from Swansea, returned with six goals and seven assists during his loan spell at English League Two side Bromley in 2024-25, showing that he has further improved his stride and developed into a creative threat.

His form in the Premiership this season, particularly as a creator, could make him an attractive target for Rangers. This is because he is a young player with potential and has already shown that he can perform in the Premiership.

So if they pounce on their star player in the summer with seven assists in the Premiership, the Gers may forget all about paying a record fee to sign Skov Olsen this summer.
