Manchester United are exploring the possibility of bringing Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford on a transfer, according to Ficages.
Two years after selling the Scotland international to Napoli for £25.4m, United are said to be reviewing their midfield structure and considering a £70m bid.
While speculation has accelerated, McTominay himself has publicly downplayed the immediate possibility of a return to England.
Scott McTominay has made a comeback in Serie A
McTominay has seen a dramatic evolution in his play since Napoli joined Serie A.
Under the tutelage of Antonio Conte, the 29-year-old has transformed from a primarily functional midfield enforcer to a more complete and progressive presence.
McTominay was instrumental during Napoli’s 2024/25 title-winning campaign. He scored 12 goals in the league, winning Serie A’s Player of the Year award and securing a nomination for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
His influence continues this season, with 10 goals and 3 assists in all competitions.
Beyond statistics, Conte has honed his build-up play and positioning, allowing him to dictate the tempo rather than simply disrupting opponent attacks.

McTominay’s results this season
Manchester United need reinforcements in midfield
Man United are in the midst of rebuilding their midfield. Casemiro’s expected departure and Manuel Ugarte’s inconsistent performances have reinforced the search for reliability and leadership in central areas.
In addition to McTominay, United are also monitoring young players such as Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleva and Elliott Anderson.
In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, McTominay said he was “very happy” in Italy and thought he could stay at Napoli “for a long time”.
His agent has reportedly not taken part in any transfer negotiations, suggesting that no immediate negotiations are underway.
