  • John Stones was a huge success at Man City
  • Everton supporters will welcome Stones with open arms

According to Football Insider, Everton are considering the possibility of bringing John Stones back to Goodison Park almost 10 years after he left for Manchester City.

The Toffees are reportedly open to signing him on a free transfer as the defender’s contract at the Etihad Stadium expires this summer, and the move would mark a dramatic homecoming.

However, while there is no denying that there is a romantic element to the deal, financial and physical considerations could complicate negotiations.

John Stones was a huge success at Man City

When Stones left Everton for £47.5m in August 2016, he was a naturally very talented ball-playing defender.

Under Pep Guardiola, he developed into one of the most tactically astute players in world football.

During his ten years at City, Stones amassed an incredible collection of silverware, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four EFL Cups, a Club World Cup and the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League as part of a historic treble.

His best achievement at City was his smooth transition into a defender-midfielder hybrid.

His composure in entering midfield, dictating plays and breaking through the opposition’s lines was the basis of Guardiola’s tactical set-up in his most dominant developments.

In recent years, the Stones have been severely handicapped by persistent muscle injuries.

With only 11 appearances in the Premier League last season and limited playing time in the 2025/2026 season, City looked to the future by signing reinforcements such as Marc Gehi.

A free transfer means Everton won’t have to pay a transfer fee, but it doesn’t necessarily make the deal easier for manager David Moyes.

Stones is likely to receive a large signing bonus and maintain high pay expectations, reflecting his position and experience, according to the report.

A return to Merseyside will resonate strongly with supporters who remember his formative years at Goodison Park.

For Everton, signing a player with leadership credentials and title-winning pedigree could provide both defensive reinforcement and a symbolic boost.

Stones could potentially win another Premier League title in his final season at the club, as City battle it out with Arsenal for the league title.
