West Ham United regret their decision not to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the start of the season.

The striker was heavily linked with a move to the London club when he was available on a free transfer at the start of the season. However, former West Ham manager Graham Potter was not keen on the move.

Calvert-Lewin has performed extremely well since joining Leeds United and West Ham could certainly have used a striker of his quality. They have struggled to score goals this season and the former Everton star would have been a very useful option for them. The 28-year-old has scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season.

Club sources confirmed Potter was reluctant to make the move and the club stopped signing the centre-forward.

“Yes, we regret not signing Calvert-Lewin, especially on a free transfer,” a senior spokesperson for West Ham’s owners told Hammers News.

“But Mr Potter didn’t want us to sign or sign a forward because he didn’t want a forward.

“Nuno came in and immediately said he wanted two and that helped us a lot.”

There is no doubt that the former Everton striker was a bargain signing for the London club. It would have been easy for West Ham to sign a player of his quality on a free transfer.

Meanwhile, Nuno Espirito Santo recognized the need for a goalscorer soon after his arrival, with West Ham signing Tati Castellanos and Pablo in January. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain safety in the Premier League. They are currently fighting for survival in the top league. If we had had a quality striker from the beginning of the season, we would not have left the team in this position.
