Leeds United knocked on the door numerous times but were ultimately thwarted by a determined Man City side who reduced the gap to Arsenal to two points.

Manchester City beat Leeds at Elland Road

On a different night, under different lighting, this result might have felt catastrophic. In fact, I felt terribly unlucky.

Leeds pushed Premier League title contenders to the breaking point at a roaring Elland Road tonight – and they will probably find they deserve at least a point for their efforts.

City left West Yorkshire with all three players, but they were made to work hard for every second.

Erling Haaland was sidelined with a minor injury in training and missed the match against the club his father once represented, but the home side were staring at every corner for the first 30 minutes as if to exploit the gap.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin should have scored within three minutes, curling in Brenden Aaronson’s excellent cross from inside the six-yard box.

The American himself then saw his shot go narrowly wide after Jayden Bogle’s press forced in a Rayan At Nouri miss. The atmosphere at Elland Road was ferocious. The city looked empty.

And, as always, City found their way.

Rayan Cherki, who started in place of the injured Haaland, played the perfect ball into the left channel in stoppage time of the first half. Ait Nouri ran into the area, drove into the area and sent a low cross into the front of the goal. Antoine Semenyo, who has been on an unusual contract since joining from Bournemouth in January, calmly scored from four yards. It was his sixth goal in 11 appearances for the club.

Daniel Falke’s side may mean business.

Leeds refused to give up in the second half.

Calvert-Lewin was thwarted by a superb block from Matheus Nunez early on, before substitute Xhaka Bijol narrowly missed the target with a header from a corner kick with three minutes remaining.

When the final whistle blew, chaos ensued. Daniel Falke received a red card after charging towards the referee in a fit of rage, leading to players from both teams facing off before Pep Guardiola intervened.

Whatever was said in the heat of the moment showed exactly how much was at stake.

Leeds remain in 15th place with 31 points, six points clear of the drop zone.

Central to the reason the scoreline remained 1-0 was the man between the posts for the home team.

Karl Darlow was outstanding, mainly in the 40th minute, when he made a stunning reflex stop to deflect Nico O’Reilly’s bullet header.

He denied Omar Marmouche shortly after, and in the second half, when Marc Guéhi rose to force a header into the net for a corner, Darlow threw himself over the line and clawed the ball away with his flying hand.

Speaking on the Sky Sports panel after the final whistle, Dallas had nothing but praise for the goalkeeper as a whole.

The former Leeds hero says Darlow has faced criticism but has made big saves in key moments.

Dallas also claimed that Darlow was “fantastic” and “coming into his own” despite the defeat at Yorkshire.

Leeds lost the game, but on another night it could have been much worse without that stop.

Darlow has quietly become one of the most important players in Falke’s fight for survival, and performances like this one only highlight why.
