  • James Trafford is struggling for minutes at Man City
  • Why Aston Villa and Newcastle are interested

Aston Villa are reportedly in the race to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford this summer, as Premier League clubs begin to consider their options between the posts.

According to TEAMtalk, Villa are one of several teams keeping an eye on the 23-year-old, whose limited game time this season has sparked fresh speculation over his future.

Newcastle United also maintain interest and are considering a move in January, meaning Trafford could be at the center of a competitive transfer battle if a slot opens up.

James Trafford is struggling for minutes at Man City

Trafford’s situation at Manchester City has been largely shaped by competition.

The English goalkeeper has found himself playing a supporting role behind Gianluigi Donnarumma and has been restricted to just 11 appearances across all competitions this season.

These appearances demonstrated his reflexes and distribution, but were not enough to establish him as a regular starter.

For a goalkeeper who has entered a key stage of his development, it is vital that he earns consistent minutes in the first team.

City’s depth in the goalkeeping department has historically limited opportunities for emerging players. The club’s ambition to compete on multiple fronts leaves little room for experimentation.

Aston Villa’s interest signals a team-building strategy under ambitious ownership.

With aspirations for European football and increased focus on long-term plans, Villa are thought to be targeting young, developing players who could develop into key roles.

Trafford fits that profile, is technically assured, comfortable with the ball at his feet and has experience in an elite training environment.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are also evaluating their options as they look to strengthen their depth within their domestic and continental commitments.

Both clubs have goalkeepers who are in the latter stages of their careers and are ready to sign young, talented replacements.
