Rory McIlroy says it’s disappointing that Jon Rahm rejected Europe’s ‘generous’ peace plan

ORLANDO, Fla. — Rory McIlroy says it’s a ‘bummer’ that Jon Rahm is the only LIV Golf player he doesn’t want to accept. European Tour Terms and Conditions He dismissed concerns that the Spaniard would be ineligible for the Ryder Cup team in order to rule out future fines.

“The Ryder Cup is bigger than any human being,” McIlroy said Wednesday.

This week, Lahm’s future in the game was thrown into doubt after he rejected the terms of a European tour offer. He will pay a previous fine for failing to obtain a release to play in an LIV Golf event, withdraw his appeal and add two tournaments to the minimum of four required for membership on the European Tour.

Rahm said at LIV Golf Hong Kong on Tuesday that the DP World Tour, as it is commercially known, was “blackmailing” players by forcing them to play two additional tournaments. Rahm said he would have signed the contract if it had included paying a fine, dropping his appeal and playing at least four tournaments..

“I don’t like this situation,” Rahm said. “I think we should be free to play wherever we want, and we should have the option to play wherever we want without being told what to do.”

Tyrrell Hatton and seven other European players who play for the Saudi-funded LIV Golf have agreed to the terms. The European Tour will help you decide which tournaments to play in order to strengthen the tournaments on your schedule.

“This is a really generous deal, in my opinion,” McIlroy said, adding that it was “much softer” than previous deals. Brooks Koepka needs PGA Tour to return.

Koepka had to pay $5 million to charity, was ineligible to receive PGA Tour stock for five years, and was not entitled to this year’s FedEx Cup bonus. He also couldn’t compete in the $20 million signature event unless he qualified.

“There’s only so much the European Tour can do to accommodate them,” McIlroy said. “If you want to play in the Ryder Cup, you have to be a member of the DP World Tour. … You have to abide by the rules and regulations.”

He said those rules meant that if a player did not obtain a release to play in a LIV Golf event when the European Tour held a tournament that week, they would be subject to a fine.

The agreement with Europe means fines for LIV Golf players will be abolished.

“You know, there’s a reason why eight out of nine guys made that deal, right?” McIlroy said. “I think this is a really good deal. Yeah, obviously John doesn’t think so and he’s very well within his rights to think so. But I don’t know what more the European Tour can do to keep their membership.”

Regarding the European Tour having a say on whether to play in additional tournaments, McIlroy persuaded Rahm by saying, “I’m sure John doesn’t want to go to South Africa for the LIV event next week.”

LIV players are required to compete in all events on the schedule rather than traveling elsewhere. Graham McDowell would not have been allowed to play in the Irish Open when LIV Golf was playing in Oregon during the same week in 2022.

“He signed a contract with LIV and has competed in all 14 events,” McIlroy said. “But DP World Tour is well within its rights as a membership organization and as a business to protect itself. And I think if you asked any member of DP World Tour about the contract they had with the members of LIV, they would all say it was quite generous.”

“Again, there’s a reason why eight out of nine people accepted it, because they’re probably thinking the same thing,” he said. “And some men think a little differently, and that’s unfortunate.”

McIlroy spoke at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on the same day. Luke Donald named European Ryder Cup captain for third consecutive year. Rahm has been on every Ryder Cup team since his debut in 2018.

“It’s great to see other players signing conditional releases and getting clarity knowing they can play (in the Ryder Cup),” Donald said. “Obviously I haven’t talked to John yet so I don’t want to comment on that yet. I know he has his reasons, but I’m looking forward to keeping in touch with him and I really hope he’s available.”

Unless he changes his mind, Mr Rahm’s future with Europe rests with a British arbitration panel that will hear his appeal. The commission ruled in favor of the European Tour in 2023, saying it was entitled as a member organization to impose a fine. If Rahm’s case is ruled in favor of the Tour, his membership and Ryder Cup eligibility would be at risk.

“I think we should all be grateful that we have a platform like the Ryder Cup to be able to play and to be able to showcase our skills and be part of something that’s obviously much bigger than ourselves,” McIlroy said. “At the end of the day, it’s about the team, and there’s no bigger player than the team.”
