  • Cristian Romero could leave Tottenham
  • Tottenham also open to releasing Romero as part of team rebuilding

Manager Fabrizio Romano insists Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has a “serious chance” of leaving the club this summer after a nightmare season in which he battled to stay in the Premier League.

Despite only signing a new four-year contract extension in August last year, the 27-year-old’s future at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is currently shrouded in uncertainty.

Romano told X: “Cuti Romero has a serious chance of leaving Tottenham in the summer. Despite signing a new contract last summer, top clubs are starting to raise the possibility of him leaving. As reported by The Telegraph and TyC Sport, Romero could be open to a sale.”

The World Cup winners are reportedly unhappy with the club’s lack of ambition and chaotic managerial changes, with manager Igor Tudor struggling to stabilize a squad left in disarray by Thomas Frank.

Romero’s relationship with the club hierarchy has reportedly reached a breaking point, particularly after publicly criticizing the board earlier this season.

Several leading European players have already expressed interest. Atlético Madrid remains a long-time fan, with coach Diego Simeone reportedly seeing Romero as the ideal leader for his defence.

Real Madrid and Manchester United are also said to be monitoring the situation closely, with the Argentine in particular potentially available for a transfer fee of around £60 million.

Tottenham also open to releasing Romero as part of team rebuilding

The departure of the ‘world class’ Romero will be a huge blow to fans, but the Spurs hierarchy seems increasingly resigned to parting ways.

The club are planning a relentless overhaul in the summer, with Romero reportedly named as one of the key big-ticket assets to be cashed in to help fund the rebuild.

Chief executive Vinay Venkatesham had previously hinted that the club needed to balance the books to comply with financial regulations and that it was “in the best interest of all our compatriots” to sell the shaky captain for a significant sum of money.

Spurs currently sit 16th in the table, raising the possibility of a summer fire sale as the club prepares for a complete reset.
