Manchester United are reported to have identified Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as one of their top targets for the position this summer.
However, the Red Devils could face competition from Arsenal following Tuttosport’s recent report that Andrea Berta is working on signing fellow Italian player with the Gunners.
However, there has also been a report in the Chronicle suggesting that Arsenal have cooled their interest in Tonali, which could be a boost for Man United.
The Newcastle star has been linked with United by the Sun, with the club looking for a proven Premier League player to strengthen their squad in the middle of the park.
Sandro Tonali named as Manchester United midfield target
As well as Tonali, United are also interested in Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleva, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.
Below is a chart comparing the stats of these five players this season. There are some interesting insights that highlight the different strengths and weaknesses of each.
Tonali is quite well-rounded, but perhaps compared to players like Anderson and Wharton, his forward and key passes don’t seem to be of sufficient quality.
Baleva is also strong defensively, but while he may have looked like an attractive target when MUFC first took notice of him last summer, his overall form has probably declined this season.
Should Manchester United sign Sandro Tonali?
Tonali was recently rated ‘low’ as not suitable for Arsenal through the Transfer Fit rating system, mainly due to how expensive he is and the options Mikel Arteta already has in the position.
United certainly need Tonali more than Arsenal, but as you can see, that doesn’t help him score that much…
