Manchester United are reportedly ready to trigger Nico Williams’ release clause this summer, but the Spanish winger also feels it is the right time to leave Athletic Bilbao.

The 23-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young attacking players in recent years, despite a slight downturn in form this season.

But that hasn’t stopped Man Utd from targeting him, with Ficherhess reporting that the Red Devils are preparing to pay his contract and poach him from Athletic Bilbao.

There is no doubt that Williams is a useful option for United’s squad, but his current form does not guarantee him a regular place in the starting XI.

Nico Williams may not be worthless to Manchester United

Williams has only scored four goals and provided two assists in 19 La Liga games, and is not the kind of player you would pay close to €100 million to sign.

Fichajes’ report is not very clear on how much the Spain international’s contract will be worth, but says it is close to that amount, which would have been a reasonable figure a year ago.

Williams has been linked with big clubs for a long time, but perhaps with signs of regression, there doesn’t seem to be much need to pay Williams this much considering MUFC already have pretty good attacking options.

There is no doubt that this would be a good deal if Williams can return to his best, but it could also be worth pursuing if he can be acquired for much less than €100m.

But for now, he’s too expensive and in poor form, so United must have better options.
