As Tottenham Hotspur completed their pre-match preparations last week, Igor Tudor stared down the barrel of a gun, aware that a trip to Anfield was likely to end his brief spell as Spurs manager.

Drafted as a replacement for the defeated Thomas Frank, Tudor trotted out four Premier League defeats, but it was more a pitiful limp than a trot, and injuries took a toll on him in the disastrous first-round Champions League knockout defeat to Atletico Madrid.

However, Tottenham did not lose to Liverpool. We drew, and the points were good. They then won at home against Diego Simeone’s Atleti. It wasn’t enough to advance to the quarterfinals, but something important was restored in N17.

It is our confidence and belief that we can definitely stave off relegation from the Premier League. Tudor is in the dugout, but who will lead the way? It’s not Cristian Romero or Mickey van de Ven, it’s Archie Gray, a 20-year-old prospect who plays with a maturity twice his age.

Why Archie Gray is Spurs’ shining light

Gray has had a tough time in recent years, but who’s to say he hasn’t developed a thick skin to protect him throughout his professional journey?

The England Under-21 star, who joined from Leeds United in 2024 in a deal worth just under £30 million, has already made 77 appearances for the Lilywhites, most of them as a teenager, and has moved around every position on the pitch.

This was tough on the young midfielder, but it also trained him and established him as one of the brightest talents in the country. After the win against Atlético, Spanish journalist Pablo Montano marveled at the “perfect footballer” and commented on his “great future”.

He was excellent, an outstanding lilywhite. He is a legitimate leader and, as the one and only Harry Redknapp said at the start of the season, ‘a future Tottenham captain’.

To be honest, this is a classic case of “statistics don’t tell the whole story.” Gray was huge against the Spaniards, his best moments being a vicious interception and an assist to Xavi Simmons. It was interesting to see him leave the pitch to applause from the home and away fans, and even Marcos Llorente waved as he left breathlessly after 81 minutes.

Tottenham’s Player of the Year? Sure, he’ll be in contention. Gray already has leadership qualities and is a role model for his younger colleagues to emulate.

Indeed, the likes of Yves Bissouma and new recruit Conor Gallagher, who have been fooled by flattery in recent months, might take a cue from his book. It would be unfair to dismiss Gallagher yet, but the Malian is out of contract this summer and could be staring at the end of his career at Spurs.

After all, there are plenty of young prospects waiting to hit the big pitch, and one young midfielder in particular has shown he could be the next Gray.

Tudor has found a new Archie Gray

Gray’s emergence as Tottenham’s most mature and exciting player is both a plus and a minus. There is a clear lack of leadership across the team, but the future is bright if they can avoid relegation.

As it turns out, Gray isn’t the only one making headlines, with Callum Orcesi impressing off the bench in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool. The teenager was on the pitch and in celebration when Richarlison scored in the final minute.

Olsage came on again in the final nine minutes of the game against Atlético Madrid, standing firm and defending well, completing all six of his pass attempts.

In fact, he featured in the Europa League match against Hoffenheim last season. He thus lifted the European trophy while still in the first stages of a promising career.

Could the rise of Orcesi, who is certain to earn more minutes, spell the end for Bissouma? This appearance suggests that Bissouma is no longer needed in the same capacity, not that he has proven indispensable in recent years.

Hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig as part of a “special generation” in Tottenham’s academy, Orsage is now establishing himself as a role model and a trailblazer for academy hopefuls.

In that he is different from Gray, who broke into Leeds’ first team in the Championship as a young player and then joined for a hefty transfer fee.

Ultimately, he may prove to be an even greater talent than Gray and someone who can spearhead a new era of success post-N17.
