Despite recently signing a long-term contract extension with Spurs, Romero’s future remains a topic of speculation as interest from major European clubs continues.

With Tottenham having a difficult season and several elite teams looking for defensive reinforcements, Romero’s situation is becoming increasingly important in the transfer landscape.

Man United plan to shake up defense

Manchester United’s interest in Romero reflects their focus on strengthening their defensive core ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Inconsistency at the back has been a recurring concern in recent seasons, with recruiters prioritizing experienced centre-backs who can lead the defensive line.

Romero, now 27, fits the profile of what United are believed to be a target for.

United’s involvement could significantly complicate Atletico Madrid’s pursuit. The Spanish club explored the possibility of signing Romero last summer, but ultimately could not reach an agreement.

Their renewed interest suggests that manager Diego Simeone remains keen on adding a defender who embodies the team’s trademark resilience and defensive strength.

Tottenham strengthened their position by securing Romero on a long-term contract extension until June 2029, a move widely interpreted as an effort to deter potential suitors.

However, reports suggest that the deal includes a special release clause, estimated to be around £52 million, which applies specifically to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

Excluding this clause, Tottenham are thought to value Romero at close to £61m, underscoring the premium attached to one of their most important players.

Financial considerations are likely to play a decisive role in the likelihood of a transfer. Whether Tottenham are open to negotiations could depend on both the size of the offer and the club’s ability to secure a suitable replacement.

Atlético Madrid continue to show strong interest in Romero, seeing him as an ideal addition to their defence. Under Simeone, Atletico have traditionally relied on disciplined defenders who can thrive in physically demanding systems.
