Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has made some surprising comments about former Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim.

Despite the Portuguese tactician suffering a very disappointing run as Manchester United manager, Maguire still seems to think very highly of him.

In an interview with the Guardian, the England international admitted that Amorim’s ideas never really worked at United, but still claims he had positive feelings towards Amorim and advised him to have a “fantastic” career elsewhere.

This may come as a surprise to some fans of the club given how badly United have performed under Amorim, but Maguire seems to have felt something for the former Sporting Lisbon manager, who was certainly highly regarded even before his time at Old Trafford.

“There was a managerial change and that helped the shape of the club and our formation,” Maguire told the Guardian.

“When I play certain plays, especially for me in the middle of a back three, I play a little bit differently than with a back four. That (the move to a back four) has definitely had an impact. It’s probably because my previous results weren’t good enough.”

“I don’t have a lot of bad things to say about Ruben. I really like Ruben. He has great ideas, which didn’t work at Manchester United. I can’t say anything about Ruben.”

“I believe he’s going to continue to have a great career and he’s probably going to win a lot of football matches at his next club. It just didn’t click, it didn’t work out and we as players have to take a lot of responsibility for that.”

“I think he deserves a lot of credit for leading the club in a certain direction and building a good, solid team.”

Could Michael Carrick be Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor?

Michael Carrick has done a fantastic job since replacing Amorim as Man United’s caretaker manager.

Still, there is still some uncertainty as to whether he will take the job permanently after the season.

So far, Carrick’s results are as follows, and he appears to have given MUFC real hope of qualifying for the Champions League…

However, while United may want a more experienced manager in the long term, Carrick may not be ready to take on such a challenging job on a permanent basis just yet.
