  • German clubs are interested in Aoi Tanaka
  • Tanaka has struggled for Leeds United this season.

Leeds United could part ways with Japan international Aoi Tanaka this summer as the club remains open regarding the midfielder’s future.

As reported by TEAMtalk, the 27-year-old has emerged as a key target for several clubs in Germany, with Leeds reportedly willing to consider a bid if he receives a suitable evaluation.

German clubs are interested in Aoi Tanaka

A return to Germany appears to be Tanaka’s most likely destination, as he remains highly rated following his performances in the second division of the Bundesliga.

All eyes are currently on Schalke 04 and Hannover 96, with two historic teams locked in a fierce promotion battle.

Schalke lead the Bundesliga second division with 52 points, while Hannover sit in fifth place, just three points off the automatic promotion spots.

Both clubs see Tanaka as an instant option to strengthen their squad should they secure a return to the top flight.

Furthermore, Union Berlin are also said to have a “tentative” interest, seeing the Japanese enforcer as a potential midfield option.

Tanaka has struggled for Leeds United this season.

Despite becoming a fan favorite during his promotion period, Tanaka has struggled to maintain his influence in the Premier League.

Tanaka joined Elland Road from Fortuna Düsseldorf for a whopping £2.9m last summer and helped the club win the Championship.

However, since Los Blancos returned to the Premier League, the midfielder has found himself left out of Daniel Farke’s starting XI due to injury and a slump in form.

This season, he has been limited to starting seven games, and has often appeared as a substitute late in games.

Statistically, his work has cooled down significantly. He played in a total of 26 games this season, scoring just two goals and giving no assists.

Previous reports suggested Leeds United would not sanction Tanaka’s departure, but it now appears the club may be looking to capitalize on the interest in the Japanese international.
