Alasdair Gold has given another update on Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial search, revealing that Roberto De Zerbi was not the only option under consideration.

De Zerbi close to Tottenham job

Following talks on Monday, De Zerbi is set to become Tottenham’s new manager, with Fabrizio Romano confirming his impending appointment yesterday, saying: “De Zerbi is really, really, really close to being the next Tottenham Hotspur manager.

“Well, it’s coming soon. Tottenham have decided to go all out for De Zerbi with a huge financial offer, a huge contract offer, a five-year contract for De Zerbi, a really important salary, one of the highest salaries for a manager in the Premier League.”

Tim Sherwood has expressed reservations about his former club appointing the Italian, insisting he is “far from safe” and his style of play is not what Spurs need at this stage of the season, with Premier League status at stake.

A number of other managers were rumored to be involved in a move to N17, including Sean Dyche and Adi Hütter, who were at one time seriously considered, but the former AS Monaco manager recently removed himself from contention in a public statement.

ENIC also considered title-winning managers before moving to De Zerbi.

Gold on X’s latest update says there is a “question mark” over whether De Zerbi can put his style of play into practice right away and save Spurs from relegation, given there are just seven games left before Spurs move towards safety.

Gold also claims that Andoni Iraola and Maurusio Pochettino were considered in the summer, with the latter being “keen” to return to north London after the USMNT’s World Cup campaign.

However, ENIC were forced to appoint a new manager sooner than expected after Igor Tudor won just one of his seven matches in charge, with De Zerbi, who has been out of work since leaving Marseille last month, the obvious choice.

Of course, appointing Pochettino could have gone some way to getting fans back on board, given that the Argentine led Tottenham to the 2019 Champions League final and maintained a solid record throughout his time at the club.

The 54-year-old went on to win the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain and then had a short spell at Chelsea, but is still highly regarded by Spurs fans, at least judging by the reaction to him on the flight from London to Madrid.

However, that ship appears to have sailed, and the era of De Zerbi may be about to begin.
