  • Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford buy option expires
  • Marcus Rashford may have a chance to bounce back

Marcus Rashford’s future is in big doubt after reports that Barcelona missed a crucial transfer deadline could open the door for a dramatic return to Manchester United this summer.

The England forward joined the Catalan giants on a season-long loan last summer following a high-profile falling out with former United manager Ruben Amorim.

Rashford has bounced back under manager Hansi Flick at the Camp Nou, but his permanent stay in Spain is uncertain.

Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford buy option expires

According to a report from Cadena SER, Barcelona’s option to activate Rashford’s permanent transfer expires on March 31, 2026.

The clause was thought to be worth around €30m (about £26m) and would have given Barca complete control over the transfer.

La Liga’s leaders lost their fixed-price advantage after failing to notify Manchester United of their intention to trigger the fee by the deadline.

Although the clause could technically be valid until mid-June, according to conflicting reports, the consensus in Spain is that Barcelona are reluctant to make the deal permanent.

Despite Rashford contributing 10 goals in La Liga and the Champions League this season, his high wage demands, coupled with La Liga’s tight salary cap, have proven to be a major stumbling block.

Barcelona are reportedly interested in a second loan move, but Manchester United are believed to be against a further loan move as they want an eventual sale to fund their rebuild in the summer.

Marcus Rashford may have a chance to bounce back

If a permanent move to Barcelona falls through, Rashford could be in for a very different atmosphere at Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old’s departure was largely due to a rift in his relationship with Ruben Amorim, but that all changed when Amorim left in January.

United have enjoyed a resurgence under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, winning seven of their last 10 games.

Carrick, who played alongside Rashford for several seasons, has gained support in the dressing room and is the favorite to be named permanent manager this summer.

If Carrick is given the full-time job, it cannot be completely ruled out that Rashford could rejoin an in-form team rather than being sold to the highest bidder.
