Arne Slott’s future at Liverpool is in doubt following a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup before the international break, with Xabi Alonso among the options to replace him.
Micah Richards sends warning to FSG over slot dismissal
The Champions League is the only trophy left for the Reds this season after being eliminated in the FA Cup at the Etihad Stadium, but action will be suspended as Slott’s side face reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.
However, Micah Richards suggested it was too early to part ways with the Dutchman given everything he achieved in his first season at Anfield, saying: “I’d like to give him another season. This season…I don’t want to say transfer, but a lot of people will say, ‘Wait, he spent a lot of money,’ but their main striker (Alexander Isak) is out (with injury).”
“I want to see him again in pre-season and if next season doesn’t go the way I want, then by Christmas, yeah, I want him to change. He’s a manager who won the Premier League, remember, only last season.”
Alonso’s availability is not in Slott’s favor, with the Spaniard being part of the side that miraculously won the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005 and remains a fan favorite.
There have been rumors of the former midfielder replacing Slot in the dugout, but it’s clear why the 44-year-old, who won the Bundesliga title, DFB Pokal and German Super Cup with Bayer Leverkusen, is an attractive option.
Alonso ready to return to management
According to journalist Román Molina, via GFFN, Alonso is now a priority target for Liverpool and has been out of a job since being released by Real Madrid in January, despite a solid record.
The reporter claimed it was “unlikely” the slot would last until the summer, after TeamTALK revealed Alonso was also open to taking the job.

The 3-2 defeat against Barcelona was the final straw for the 15-time Champions League winners, who have incredibly high standards, but it still feels incredibly harsh to sack a manager with such an impressive goals-per-game return.
GFFN added that FSG named Alonso as the frontrunner to replace Jurgen Klopp before choosing the slot, and were keen to sign Alonso, who prefers a 3-4-2-1 formation.
The former Leverkusen manager has re-emerged as Liverpool’s top target, with Slott likely to be sacked before the start of next season, joining the short list of Premier League title contenders.
