The future of Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee is at stake as Manchester United prepare for the crucial summer transfer window.
According to Football Insider, the Red Devils are prepared to formally allow him to leave the club at the end of the 2025/26 season, but only on the strict condition that the club’s recruitment department secures a quality replacement first.
The Dutchman joined the Premier League giants with high expectations, but a change of manager and poor form didn’t help his cause.
Early in his Manchester United career, he was used as a back-up option to Rasmus Hejlund, but now Benjamin Sesco has become the new leader of United’s attack, keeping Zirksee in check.
Joshua Zirkzee continues to struggle with Man United
When United bosses confirmed the signing of Zirksee from Bologna for £35m in the summer of 2024, he was expected to be the ideal player for the club.
They were looking for an attacker who could fill the gap between the attackers and the midfield.
His link-up play and presence up front were highly praised and it was believed he could be a solution to United’s problems.
However, the transition to the frenetic pace of the Premier League proved to be a steep learning curve.
Throughout his time at Manchester, the 24-year-old has scored just nine goals in 69 appearances in all competitions.
His situation has become more complicated this season under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Dutch player attracts interest from European clubs
Despite his struggles in England, Zirksee’s stock remains significantly higher on the British continent. News of his possible acquisition immediately sparked a massive bidding war.
A return to Italy appears to be the most logical escape route, with powerhouses such as Juventus, Napoli, AC Milan and Atalanta showing serious interest.
Even ambitious Serie A side Como are reportedly eyeing him as a statement signing.
Additionally, Bundesliga clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund are also closely monitoring his situation.
Zirksee promised a lot and delivered little, but it must not be forgotten that the environment at Old Trafford worked against him and did not provide him with the best foundation for success.
