It was an emotional day at the Masters as competition for the green jacket intensified in the third round at Augusta National.
Rory McIlroy took a big step toward winning his second consecutive Masters title after a spectacular second-round finale at Augusta National on Friday. He is scheduled to play with young American Sam Burns on Saturday.

Northern Irishman McIlroy, who completed golf’s Grand Slam with a memorable victory last year, made six birdies in his final seven holes to move into the lead at 12 under par. This was six places ahead of their closest rivals, the American pair of 2018 champion Patrick Reed and youngster Sam Burns. This was the largest lead after 36 holes in Masters history.
Briton Justin Rose, who lost to McIlroy in last year’s play-offs, was tied for third place at five under with compatriot Tommy Fleetwood and Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry, with all three enjoying a productive second round until McIlroy waved off his pursuers in the closing stages.
