        • He was worse than Solanke: with Spurs’ flop of 2/10, De Zerbi will have to start again

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has slammed Cristian Romero after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland.

Romero injury update after collision with Kinski

Romero was sent off in the 70th minute at the Stadium of Light for a nasty collision with Antonin Kinski and was replaced by Kevin Danso, but Argentine journalist Gastón Eduard later confirmed that the centre-back will undergo a series of tests.

With Spurs within two points of safety, injury to key players was the last thing Roberto De Zerbi needed, and the manager stressed his importance to the team after the game.

De Zerbi said: “I hope it won’t be too big of a problem. He’s a very important player for us. He’s a great player, a great character. We need him to finish the season.”

The defender left the field in tears, perhaps fearing not being involved in a collision and possibly missing out on the World Cup against Argentina.

However, Sherwood had little sympathy for Romero and attacked his centre-back partner Micky van de Ven, 27, live on Sky Sports.

“Romero was crying when he came off the pitch. It’s irresponsible. I couldn’t trust him as far as I could throw. The captain of the club, he threw the club under the bus so many times this season.”

“And then there’s Micky Van de Ven. For me he has all the qualities to be a top-draw player, but he plays for himself.”

Cristian Romero controversy this season

The Argentina international publicly criticized Spurs for not making enough improvements during the January transfer window, and was also in the news a few days later when he was sent off in the first half of a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

But the captain’s comments were perhaps justified given that Conor Gallagher hasn’t uprooted a tree since joining from Atletico Madrid, despite being criticized by Alasdair Gold for his performances.

Romero may have let his team down at times, but this could be a big mistake for De Zerbi. He was definitely one of the better players in the defeat against Sunderland, as he completed more defensive actions (9) than any other Tottenham player.

Tottenham, who are in danger of being relegated, suffered their 16th defeat in the Premier League this season against Sunderland.
