  • Newcastle United aim to rebuild midfield
  • The Magpies need a midfield enforcer like Ugarte.

Newcastle United’s hierarchy is already laying important foundations for an ambitious summer transfer window.

Central to their recruitment strategy is the pressing need to strengthen their midfield department.

According to Football Insider, the Magpies have identified Manchester United’s combative midfielder Manuel Ugarte as their main target to anchor the team ahead of the next campaign.

The 25-year-old Uruguay international has emerged as the much-needed piece to Newcastle’s tactical puzzle.

Ugarte is known for his work rate, defensive quality and the strength he brings to the midfield.

However, with Man United’s constantly evolving tactical set-up and an overcrowded midfield team, Ugarte’s role at Old Trafford has at times fluctuated.

Newcastle United aim to rebuild midfield

Newcastle’s reinforcements are reportedly keen to take advantage of the situation, viewing the 25-year-old as a specialist ‘number six’ in the Premier League who can immediately add to their defensive solidity.

The Magpies have historically relied on Bruno Guimarães’ brilliance to dictate the tempo of games, but the Brazilian maestro is at his most destructive when he is given the freedom to move higher up the pitch and adjust his attack.

Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider:

“I think they (Newcastle) had a long-term interest in Ugarte.

“They’ve been keeping an eye on him since he was at Sporting Lisbon, but the last few games haven’t gone well for Ugarte. Firstly with PSG and now with Man United, he’s been a bit underwhelming.

“He has fallen out of favor this season under manager Michael Carrick. He has started just seven games in the Premier League and has struggled to make the impact many expected.”

The Magpies need a midfield enforcer like Ugarte.

By deploying a disciplined and pure destroyer like Ugarte at the base of midfield, Newcastle would effectively unchain Guimarães and relieve him of his defensive burden.

Furthermore, Newcastle United’s interest could be linked to the uncertain future of Sandro Tonali, who has attracted interest from top Premier League clubs and could leave St James’ Park in the summer.

Ugarte hasn’t impressed at Old Trafford, so it might not be too difficult for Eddie Howe and his team to sign him from the Red Devils.

Man United have made strengthening their midfield a top priority in the summer transfer window, so Ugarte is expected to fall further down the pecking order.

Newcastle United could offer him more playing time and the chance to remain in the Premier League.
