Have you ever wondered what it is? Really Are you in the mood to win a major championship? Most of us will never experience it, but thanks to data provided by Rory McIlroy-endorsed wearable fitness tracker Whoop, we can get a glimpse into the physiology behind major Sunday highs and lows.

On Monday, Hoops shared McIlroy’s numbers from the final round of the Masters, but one factor stood out above all else. It was his composure under pressure.

As McIlroy took a two-shot lead on the final hole, his heart rate told a compelling story. According to Whoop, McIlroy’s resting heart rate is in the 47 to 49 beats per minute range, but after hitting a wayward tee shot into a tree on the right side of the fairway on the 18th, his heart rate spiked to 135 BPM. This is a normal reaction in a high-stakes moment. But McIlroy quickly regained control. By the time he started his second shot, his heart rate had dropped to 121 BPM.

After McIlroy hit his approach into the greenside bunker, his heart rate rose again to 136 BPM, but quickly settled down again. On his par putt, McIlroy’s heart rate dropped to 117 BPM, then dropped to 117 BPM on his winning tap-in.

The data point to surprising conclusions. At a moment when most players would tense up or speed up, McIlroy did the opposite and slowed himself down.

McIlroy showed the same pattern of composure and control throughout the tournament. His recovery scores have remained consistently high, reaching 87% on Sunday and peaking at 94%. This shows that his body continues to prepare. His strain reached 16.8. This reflects continued effort without succumbing to fatigue.

Sleep, which is often overlooked, also gave him an edge. I slept over 9 hours from Saturday night to Sunday (92% sleep performance), and averaged 8.5 hours over the entire weekend. His resting heart rate was surprisingly stable between 47 and 49 BPM. This is proof that his elite conditioning and recovery is paying off.

And the load was no joke: more than 24,000 steps on Sunday alone, and more than 91,000 steps in all four rounds.

What about take-home? McIlroy has learned to steady himself under pressure. Even in the most intense moments, he does not let adrenaline take over, suppresses it and regains control. In the end, that calmness can make a big difference.

Rory McIlroy kept his cool at the Masters on Sunday. This revealing data proves that it first appeared in golf.
