West Bromwich Albion’s potential point deductions may not be finalized until after the final day of the Championship season, according to reports.

West Brom’s Championship status is in jeopardy after PSR allegations

West Brom have been charged with breaching the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations, and although the club immediately denied any wrongdoing, they could face a points deduction, which could have a major impact on the Championship’s relegation battle.

Under manager James Morrison, the Baggies have become much harder to win, going unbeaten in seven games in the second tier and with four games remaining, they are two points clear of the bottom three.

However, in welcome news for Portsmouth, Leicester City and Oxford United, the Baggies are set to receive a point deduction, which will affect their results this season rather than apply to the 2026-27 season.

Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday have already been given season-altering sanctions and Albion could be next, but the EFL could be more lenient as the offenses are thought to be minor.

How many points could West Brom be deducted?

If a club breaches the regulation by up to £2 million, they will be assessed a three-point penalty. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who is currently looking into the Baggies’ accounts, said the breach was likely to fall within that range.

Maguire was particularly shocked by the revelation that West Brom may not even know if they will be punished until the end of the season. “I have done the math and, although I don’t have any complicated data, I get the impression that Albion are probably not more than £1 million over the limit.

The Championship’s relegation battle may have had its share of twists and turns.

“Albion is working in conjunction with the EFL and had to follow a business plan as it could be seen as co-operating, but strictly speaking a fee (introduction) would be required if the limit was exceeded.

“But there’s another issue in that we’re almost at the end of the season and it’s unfair to Albion and it’s unfair to the other clubs in the relegation battle. A: Will there be charges? B: Innocent or guilty? C: Will tariffs be applied before the end of the season?”

West Brom’s remaining games in the relegation battle

All Morrison and his players can do is try to pick up as many points as possible from the remaining four games, but it will be a mixed bag with a home game against promotion-chasing Ipswich Town followed by a trip to relegation-bound Wednesday on the final day.
