Slot risks big backlash: key players leave as Liverpool pursue PSG return

Liverpool face PSG in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals tonight, with Mohamed Salah on the bench for the Premier League champions.

The Egyptian international was also eliminated in the first leg and the decision to keep him on the bench for the return leg will not go down well with the fans.

RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins revealed on X: “Mohamed Salah will be on the bench for the second leg of the quarter-final against PSG. It could be his last game against Liverpool in the Champions League.”

Liverpool need their best attackers on the pitch to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the first leg. Salah was on the scoresheet against Fulham at the weekend and did very well in that game. They could have used his experience, creativity and goal-scoring ability in the final third.

Apart from his qualities as a player, his leadership, skills and experience would have been invaluable to Liverpool.

Liverpool have had a disappointing season so far, sitting fifth in the Premier League table. They will be desperate to advance in the UEFA Champions League and overturn their deficit to PSG, but it will be difficult without one of their best players ever.

Slott has faced a lot of criticism this season regarding his team selection and tactics. This decision could sour Salah’s relationship with the fans if Liverpool are eliminated from the UEFA Champions League with Salah on the bench.
