Despite the club currently sitting in the Premier League relegation zone, the Italian tactician insisted that the possibility of playing in the Championship is not his primary concern.

Roberto de Zerbi says his relationship with Tottenham’s hierarchy is important if he wants to stay
Ahead of this weekend’s crucial Premier League match, De Zerbi was asked directly whether he would remain in north London next season, regardless of which division the club is in.
His response shifted the focus from the league standings to the dynamics inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
De Zerbi said (via Sky Sports):
“The problem is not the league. The problem is maintaining the relationship with the board and being on the same page on the project.”
When asked to clarify that being on the same page with the Spurs hierarchy, rather than the club’s divisional position, was the deciding factor in his tenure, De Zerbi replied: “Yes, everyone is on the same page.”
The comments suggest that De Zerbi needs full transparency and tactical support from the board while working on a long-term rebuild.
The request for a unification project is a serious ultimatum for the club, which is undergoing turbulent times and will undergo multiple managerial changes in 2026.
Can De Zerbi keep Spurs?
For De Zerbi, the immediate task remains daunting. Tottenham are languishing in 18th place after losing 1-0 to Sunderland on their debut.
The club are currently in a dire 14-game winless spell in the Premier League, and are yet to register a win in the 2026 calendar year.
With six games left, the pressure to find a winning formula is immense.
De Zerbi cited the impending return of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski as reason for his optimism, but first they must find a way to overcome a difficult situation, including games against Chelsea and Everton.
If he can’t bridge the safety gap, the strength of his relationship with the board will be tested sooner than expected.
