  • Ben Jacobs: Estevao aims for early return for 2026 World Cup
  • Risks that could impact your long-term career loom

Chelsea’s hellish season has taken another disastrous turn with teenage sensation Estevao Willian out for the rest of the season with a serious hamstring injury.

The news, first reported by a reporter for The Athletic, confirms that the 18-year-old forward suffered the injury in Chelsea’s recent defeat to Manchester United.

Scans reportedly revealed a “grade 4” tear, an injury that typically requires long-term rehabilitation.

For a player who has been perhaps the only bright spot in what has been a disastrous season for the Blues, the timing couldn’t have been worse for both club and country.

Ben Jacobs: Estevao aims for early return for 2026 World Cup

Despite the seriousness of the initial reports, journalist Ben Jacobs offered a glimmer of hope regarding the Brazilian’s recovery timeline.

Jacobs confirmed to X that Estevao’s domestic season is over but he is already focused on a rapid rehabilitation program.

“As announced by The Athletic FC, Estevao is likely to miss the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury. It is a sad blow for the teenager, who has had an impressive first season at the club.”

“While there is some doubt about his availability for the World Cup, Estevao said he aims to be back on grass within 30 days. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be fit for the tournament.”

Risks that could impact your long-term career loom

It would be a dream for the teenager to represent the Selecao at the World Cup, but medical experts and club staff are reportedly wary of the risks involved in rushing his return.

Forcing him to return early from a severe hamstring injury could lead to chronic relapse problems and hinder Estevao’s explosive pace, the core of his game.

Chelsea have invested heavily in the youngster as part of a long-term project and the board could face difficult talks with the Brazilian Football Federation over his management.

For now, the Blues have to survive the final weeks of a disintegrating season without their most creative expression, while their players face a race against time to ensure they don’t miss out on world football’s biggest stage.
