Sunderland fans were shocked this week by rumors that manager Regis Le Bris could be sacked if the Black Cats fail to perform in European football this season.

Le Bliss talks about Sunderland sacking rumors

Le Bris dismissed claims he could lose his job at the end of an excellent first year back in the Premier League if the club misses out on qualifying for European competition.

Reports this week suggest that the club’s leadership could opt for a head coaching change this summer if the Frenchman fails to qualify for either the Conference League or Europa League football in the 2026-27 season, which would have been beyond their wildest dreams at the start of the year.

Asked whether he had spoken to owner Kyrill Louis-Dreyfus or director of football Florent Guizolfi about the speculation, Le Bris said: “No, we can talk about other topics.

“My position is always on the table, whether it’s a plus or a minus. It doesn’t matter to me. We’re in a really good position here and we work really well together. I wanted to be in the Premier League at the end of the season, but that’s over.”

“We wanted to build consistency and top-10 status, and we’re on our way there. I hope we have the ability to achieve that together.”

Le Bris is under contract at Sunderland until the summer of 2028 and is represented by fellow French manager Patrick Vieira and the same agency.

Asked further whether he was surprised by the allegations, Le Bris clarified that he was not seeking guarantees about his future, adding:

“Everyone can have an opinion about my work or your work. I’m not against rumors and gossip. I’m just focused on my work. It doesn’t matter.”

Villains want to sign ‘incredible’ player.

With several Premier League sides, including Chelsea and Crystal Palace, potentially looking for a new manager this summer, it would certainly be surprising if the Wearsiders parted ways with the 50-year-old manager in such a competitive market, and Fabrizio Romano has now revealed he is aware of the situation.

In fact, on Friday, the reporter shared on his personal YouTube channel what should be music to the ears of Black Cats supporters: Le Bris isn’t going anywhere.

“There have been rumors that Le Bliss could lose his job at Sunderland if he fails to qualify for European football, but my understanding is that Sunderland want Le Blis to remain.

“It’s not based on how the Premier League will go this season, it’s focused solely on the possibility of continuing at Le Bris, so that’s how it feels at the moment.

“We will find out at the end of the season, but Sunderland have confirmed that they wish to continue with Regis Le Bris.”

Sunderland vs Nottingham Forest team news

Sunderland are hoping for a 100 per cent recovery from the Paraguay international, who was one of the players who suffered a series of illnesses ahead of Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Aston Villa, which Sunderland won 1-0 at the City Ground in September thanks to an Omar Alderete goal.

Nottingham Forest defender Murillo has been ruled out of Friday’s fixture.

The Brazil centre-half limped off during Sunday’s 4-1 win over Burnley with an apparent hamstring injury and will not be fit for the visit to the Stadium of Light.

Murillo will join Callum Hudson-Odoi in the treatment room, with the winger out for the season after undergoing surgery on a thigh problem.
