  • Michael Carrick revived Man United
  • Ratcliffe believes Southgate’s profile is perfect for the club

Manchester United are working behind the scenes to consider their options for the next manager’s position.

The Red Devils sacked Ruben Amorim this season and replaced him with interim manager Michael Carrick, who went on to achieve great success at the club.

The former midfield maestro was appointed interim manager and the clouds lifted almost overnight.

But despite essentially saving United’s 2025/26 season, the 44-year-old may still be looking over his shoulder as the summer approaches.

Michael Carrick revived Man United

Carrick has been nothing short of a revelation in the dugout. Since taking the reins, he has restored harmony to a fractured dressing room and delivered great results on the pitch.

With eight wins, two draws and just two losses from 12 games, no Premier League team has accumulated more points during his tenure. He has transformed a woefully inconsistent side into a cohesive side, currently sitting comfortably in third place and firmly on track to secure Champions League football.

According to TEAMtalk, Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants the club to consider former England manager Gareth Southgate for the Man United post despite doing a great job at Old Trafford.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada are conducting a thorough management review, but the final decision rests with Ratcliffe.

Mr Southgate, 55, had been waiting to step away from management since stepping down from his post with the Three Lions after the Euro 2024 final against Spain in July 2024.

Ratcliffe reportedly believes Southgate’s profile, people management skills and experience of dealing with huge media pressure are a perfect match for Old Trafford’s demanding demands.

While other potential players have surfaced on the board, including Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann and Carlo Ancelotti, Southgate’s name continues to emerge as a serious and real threat to Carrick’s lasting ambitions.

Towards the end of the season, Man United find themselves at a crossroads.

Will they reward the undeniable achievements and internal harmony that Carrick has built, or will they pivot to the established, higher-profile vision that Ratcliffe seems to crave for Southgate?

It’s entirely up to INEOS to decide whether to roll the dice on a new era or stick with the man who succeeded in bringing magic back to the Theater of Dreams.
