The Red Devils sacked Ruben Amorim in January and shortly thereafter appointed Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.

Despite not being a big name or experienced option, Carrick did a great job of steadying the ship, winning nine of the 13 games he was in charge of and leading his team to the brink of Champions League qualification.

Carragher revealed in a column for the Telegraph that he now backs Carrick as the best choice to become Man United’s permanent manager, despite previously advocating Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

There has been a lot of turmoil in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, but Carragher feels Carrick has done a great job of bringing calm and stability to United since taking over.

It may be a gamble, but Carragher also feels Carrick is worth taking as there are no other good candidates at the moment.

“Given what the club needs here and now, Carrick is the ideal choice to take full control this summer. It makes sense in the short term with an eye to the long term,” Carragher wrote.

“Over the past four months, Carrick has given himself and the United board something precious that is generally elusive in football: time. He has regained a sense of normalcy, a quality that is undervalued at any club, especially one of the biggest.”

He added: “While there may be heated debates about whether Carrick deserves the opportunity to take the job on a temporary basis or whether he deserves the job full-time given his past work, he has created an environment where our players can enjoy practice and game days and have good relationships with the coaches and staff.

“Why rush to change just because the current person in charge is not a big-name businessman?Especially considering the current state of the management market.

“Since the firing of director Ruben Amorim, there has been a predictable urge to list all the notable directors who would be attractive enough to replace him. The problem is that we live in an era where fewer directors are making box office hits.

Andoni Iraola could rival Michael Carrick in the post for United

Our understanding is that Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is alongside Carrick as United’s frontrunners for next season.

The Spanish tactician made a huge impact during his time at Bournemouth and has attracted interest from Chelsea, who will leave his position at Bournemouth at the end of the season.

Still, MUFC have not made a final decision on whether to keep Carrick beyond this season, with the club likely to evaluate their options after the season ends.

While Iraola certainly looks destined for the big job sooner rather than later, Carrick has already gained experience in dealing with the immense pressure at Old Trafford, both as a player and in his role as caretaker manager.
