Marcus Erickson: Alex Pallow’s pass for Indy 500 victory

Marcus Erickson admitted that missing another victory in the Indianapolis 500 is “painful” and “irritating.”

Andretti driver Ericson appeared as a surprising competitor for the Indy 500 after running out of quilters in strategy.

Palou had to save fuel to save fuel in the finish, but he managed to stop a great move on turn 1 on 14 laps to refuse Ericsson’s victory in the biggest race on the IndyCar calendar.

This was the second time Erickson finished runner-up in the Indy 500 in three years, losing Pensuke’s victory over Josef Newgarden on the final lap of 2023.

Erickson admitted that this defeat was difficult to swallow for him, given the advantages of fuel that he was in his rival at the final stages of the race.

“It was painful to miss again,” he said. “This is the second place, this is a place like a winner’s take, and it really hurts.

“I am truly proud of our 28-person crew. They did a really good job.

“We raced really tough. The car was really hard to drive and we were running on our backs for its mid-center. But we kept fighting, trying to come back, we kept fighting, we had a tough year here, but today we showed what we can do.

“Of course, the second finish is really difficult. At the same time, congratulations to Alex and Chip Ganassi Race. This certainly hurts.”

Palou surprised Ericsson, braked for Turn 1 and found the room inside the Swedes, grabbing the lead with 14 laps.

Paloo was expected to prefer to sit behind Erikson and save as much fuel as possible to make slow attacks.

However, Palou was able to use Slipstream to save fuel as Devlin Defrancesco and Louis Foster almost descended the lap and ran directly in front of them.

Erickson said that the race-winning pass that Paloo made in Turn 1 would keep him in the night as he regrets not closing the door for the left-handed Spaniard.

“We made it difficult, so we had a rapper in front of us and he ran to me.

“I didn’t know if he wanted that or not, and that’s what it is. I’m always thinking right now, when I should have covered myself.

“When he got it, I tried everything to get back to him, but it’s really hard in that dirty air. It’s really frustrating.

“I was leading, I covered that race and I missed it, and it would be hard to swallow.

He added:

I need to look back on that. Like I said, it’s going to keep me up for a while. ”
