This change will come into effect next season, so our team of experts will start working on it immediately. Predict what the field of first 76 teams will look like. You might expect mid-major teams to benefit from an extra tournament spot, but that wasn’t the case. As our own David Cobb explains, five major conferences were the real beneficiaries.

  • Cobb: “College basketball’s top five major leagues received all eight of the additional at-large bids in our first Bracketology run with a 76-team format. In fact, outside of these five leagues, there was only one other multiple-bid league, and that was the Atlantic 10, which has two. However, our simulations did not account for the inevitable emergence of bid thieves.”
