Matheus Fernandes looks set to leave West Ham this summer

Manchester United are keen to sign Matheus Fernandes and, according to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, the Red Devils are stepping up efforts to bring the West Ham sensation to Old Trafford this summer.

Speaking about his future on the Transfer Insider Podcast, O’Rourke said: “I think Man United and a lot of clubs will want to take advantage of West Ham’s relegation potential with Matheus Fernandes.”

“He is on a long list of midfield targets United are looking at.

“If West Ham lose, it will be almost impossible to keep the Portuguese midfielder because I am sure he does not want to play in the Championship.

“Many clubs, not just Manchester United, will be keeping an eye on Fernandes and West Ham’s retention battle.

“And I think it will be a really tough battle for West Ham to keep him, especially if they lose.”

While the Hammers have struggled throughout the season, the 21-year-old has stood out with his consistent performances. He made a huge impact on his debut for the London club.

Manchester United keep an eye on Fernandes

He played in 35 matches and contributed to 7 goals. Although he prefers to play as a central midfielder, this youngster has played in a variety of midfield roles. His impressive performances have earned him the attention of Manchester United.

With Casemiro leaving and Manuel Ugarte likely to be sold, the Red Devils are looking to revamp their midfield, and Fernandes is pretty high on their wish list. They may aim to make the most of the Hammers’ relegation chances.

West Ham are reluctant to lose the 21-year-old but will be unable to keep him if they fail to survive in the top flight. Fernandes will not want to feature in the Championship, with a number of top clubs already keen to sign him.
