Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has suggested that Xabi Alonso is the best option for the Blues to replace Liam Rosenior.

Speaking to Ladbrokes at the launch of Ladisfaction, Di Matteo revealed that he is a big fan of Alonso, praising him for doing “great things” during his time in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen.

Di Matteo, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, also praised Alonso’s style of football and the useful experience he gained from managing the big names and egos in the Real Madrid dressing room.

The former Chelsea manager is also a fan of former Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas, but appears to be leaning towards Alonso as his preferred choice.

Is Xabi Alonso the Chelsea manager instead of Cesc Fabregas?

Alonso enjoyed a remarkable performance during his time as Leverkusen manager, winning his first Bundesliga title and reaching the final of the Europa League.

The Spanish tactician was a bit unlucky in his job at Real Madrid this season, winning 24 of his 34 games as manager before being sacked.

Alonso would certainly be able to get his coaching career back on track at Chelsea, but Di Matteo appears to be a big fan.

“In terms of managers, I actually think there are a lot of good names,” Di Matteo said.

“Cesc Fabregas is one of them, Xabi Alonso did a great job in Germany…I think Chelsea should look at these names.

“They are both progressive managers who like to play in a certain style. They have both proven that they are capable. Alonso is probably a little better than Fabregas, who is still in the early stages of his managerial career.”

“However, Alonso has certainly shown that he can bring trophies and has also gained great locker room experience from his time at Real Madrid. So we will certainly have the right manager for our club.”

Even if Chelsea don’t make a move for Alonso, another top club will certainly make a move for him – do you think the Blues will win the race? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
