Jannik Sinner breaks Novak Djokovic’s record of 1000 Masters wins and is on the verge of making more history in Rome

With a Grand Slam not far away on the calendar, Jannik Sinner is currently enjoying one of the best results in tennis history.

The ATP No. 1 player defeated Andrei Rublev in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open on Thursday, making it his 31st straight victory in the Masters 1000 tournament. This ties him with Novak Djokovic for the longest record since the system was introduced in 1990.

The current streak continues to the 2025 Paris Masters and extends to Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome this year. He won 30 of his 32 matches in straight sets.

Sinner’s last loss at the Masters 1000, the second most prestigious tournament after the Grand Slam, was in Shanghai, when he was forced to retire due to an injury in the third round against Talon Greek Pool. Sinner’s last loss in a Masters 1000 match was a year ago at the 2025 Italian Open, where he lost in the final to Carlos Alcaraz.

Jannik Sinner is the overwhelming favorite at Roland Garros

Sinner only faced Alcaraz once during the streak, defeating the Spaniard in the Monte Carlo final. Alcaraz played just one more game for Barcelona before withdrawing with a wrist injury and will miss this year’s Roland Garros.

With Alcaraz out, there’s no telling how dominant Sinner will be in the coming weeks and months.

He just needs to win two more games, in the semi-finals and final in Rome, to accomplish two major feats. A win at the Italian Open would give him his sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title, with five already an unprecedented number, and he would have won all nine Masters 1000 titles in his career. That’s something only Novak Djokovic has done, and Sinner may be on his way to doing it at 24 years old.

As for the tournament in a few weeks, Sinner entered Thursday’s match as the -275 favorite to win at BetMGM, winning his first French Open title and completing a career Grand Slam.
