Leeds United are a Premier League club and here to stay.

It may not sound like much, but after three seasons out of the top flight and a turbulent Championship era, securing survival at the first try deserves real praise.

14th place and 44 points represents a solid return for a newly-promoted side, although there is still room for more, and Daniel Farke’s side can head into the summer confident that the difficult part – keeping up – is over.

It wasn’t always comfortable.

There were sticky spots, tight margins, and a nervous afternoon along the way. But Leeds got the job done when it mattered and were safe for the rest of the game.

The picture from Elland Road looks pretty healthy compared to Tottenham and West Ham, who are still sweating it out heading into the final day.

In negotiations: Leeds submit contract offer for Elland Road new signing Ethan Ampadu

Daniel Farke could meet a new Ethan Ampadu if Leeds United sign the rising star on a free agent deal.

For a club likely to struggle, this was a campaign to be quietly proud of, especially after reaching the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1987.

Now comes the exciting part.

Now that Leeds have secured their place in the top flight, they can plan with clarity and ambition. Recruitment departments have been working behind the scenes for weeks, but the objective is clear. It’s about adding the qualities needed to break into the top half next season and make this more than just a survival story.

However, one of the targets they were chasing slipped through their fingers.

Wolves star Joao Gomez accepts transfer offer from Leeds

According to Brazilian journalist Pablo Oliveira, Leeds made an offer for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomez, but the 25-year-old turned it down.

Leeds were not alone in their disappointment.

Zenit, Atalanta and Galatasaray have all made offers for the Brazil international, some of which have been described as being “financially better” than the offer that was ultimately accepted.

Gomez chose Atlético Madrid, seeing a move to the Spanish capital as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he was not going to pass up.

It’s hard to blame him.

Atletico are closing in on a deal worth around £39m with the player, who has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent midfielders since joining from Flamengo in January 2023.

Gomez played in 34 league games this season, more than any other Wolves player, and played nearly 2,750 minutes, contributing one goal and one assist.

Even in a team that finished bottom of the table, his standards rarely dropped.

Wolves initially valued Gomez at around £50 million, but the relegation has weakened their negotiating position significantly.

The club’s eight-year stay in the Premier League ended in disaster. They lost their opening five games and never moved out of the bottom of the table, becoming only the second club in history to lose all 19 of their opponents in a single season.

Selling Gomez at a reduced price was always the most likely outcome as the economic realities of Championship football become more acute.

It’s disappointing for Leeds to miss out, but the fact that they were even in the conversation speaks for itself.

Gomez’s profile – aggressive, tactically disciplined, comfortable in possession and a Brazilian international – would have represented a serious statement of intent.

That Leeds were prepared to put a concrete offer on the table for such a talented player suggests they have both the appetite and the budget for meaningful business this summer.

The question is, where will they go next?

The club’s wider plans are still taking shape, but the ambition is clear.
