The long-term saga and potential moves towards Saudi Arabia surrounding Liverpool star Mohamed Sarah have finally come to an end, but only after he has come close to a dramatic move in his career.

Earlier this season, the attackers found themselves at the heart of a fierce transfer speculation, supported by uncertainty over his contract status at Anfield.

He eventually signed a new two-year contract with the Merseyside Club in April, but he now admits that the possibility of moving to Saudi Arabia is very realistic.

Interest from the Gulf states was not new. In August 2023, Al Ittihad presented an astounding £150 million bid.

The rejection did not stop the Saudian professional league, which he had long seen as the 32-year-old target.

With the Reds attacker sorting out his future at Anfield and winning the league title, he confirmed he was involved in negotiations about a move to the Saudi Arabia.

Sarah said in sports: “I thought there would be a good opportunity to join the Saudi Arabian League, and I believed that if I didn’t renew my contract with Liverpool, I might go there.

“My relationship with the people there (in Saudi Arabia) is still good and ongoing. There have been serious negotiations to sign me.”

“The Liverpool fans were part of the contract renewal process. I was with the club for seven years, so they put pressure on the management team.

“From day one, I knew they wanted me to stay.”

After a very successful season in the Premier League, Sarah was selected as a Premier League player of the season, but won the Golden Boots and Playmaker Award.

It will be his best individual season and shows how important it is for the Reds to keep players at the club.

34 goals and 23 assists in all competitions from Sarah this season would have been difficult for Liverpool management to trade.

After his two-year contract ends at Anfield, he can still go to Saudi Arabia and join a favourable league in the Middle East.
