Golf fans don’t really agree. Is there a tree or not? Rollback or no rollback. Either Jason Day suits you or Jason Day doesn’t suit you. Everywhere you look, new battle lines seem to be being drawn. But at the PGA Championship on Friday, we found a rare moment of consensus when golf fans across the country collectively applauded and applauded ESPN’s Garrick Higo’s rocket-launched countdown to his second-round tee time after the South African was given a two-stroke penalty for being late to the tee box on Thursday. Mr. Higo, the time has already been decided.

Now, that last one is kind of a complaint, but you can never please everyone. The reality is that golf fans love to complain about golf broadcasts, so when so many people go out of their way to praise a “world leader,” you know they’re doing something right. The only thing that would have made this even better was for Higgo to close the distance again. But Higgo saved the drama for Friday’s golf course, showing up a full seven minutes early for his tee time just to be safe.

But all good things must come to an end, and this seems like the logical conclusion to Garrick Higo’s teatime story. Three days in a row of Higgo hysteria would be too much, so let’s hope CBS and Paramount+ get the memo before taking over reporting duties on Saturday.
